Infertility

Infertility is a growing issue in India, affecting both men and women equally. Here are some statistics and other information about infertility in India .

In 2019–2020, 18.7 out of every 1,000 women who had been married for at least five years were infertile. The prevalence of infertility increases as the length of marriage decreases. The prevalence of infertility varies by state, with the highest rates in Goa, Lakshadweep, and Chhattisgarh.

The WHO estimates that the overall prevalence of primary infertility in India is between 3.9% and 16.8%. However, estimates vary widely by state and region, and some studies use different definitions of infertility.

The prevalence of primary infertility in India is gradually on the rise. These findings underscore the pressing need for targeted interventions and policy initiatives to confront the infertility challenge in the country. Recognizing the substantial burden and regional disparities is of paramount importance for policymakers and healthcare providers as they work towards developing and implementing effective strategies for both prevention and management. Additionally, establishing a country-level surveillance system could be invaluable in gathering first hand information on infertility and its associated challenges.
